Putting together this best natural hair dye guide was challenging. Sadly, it’s not possible to find commercially available 100% natural dye because the chemicals required to fix the color to your hair don’t have a natural equivalent.
You can, however, get close and many brands have put a lot of effort in over the last few years to deliver more natural dyes.
These natural or organic hair dyes are kinder to your hair and skin than products with a more severe chemical make up and they are certainly less toxic too.
Of course, they are also more environmentally friendly and that makes them the best tool for dying hair when you want to live a sustainable lifestyle.
Best Natural Hair Dyes
There are many potential best organic hair dyes out there on the market and new ones are released daily but at the time we went to press these were our eight choices for best natural dyes.
Naturtint Permanent Hair Color
#1 TOP PICK | BEST NATURAL HAIR COLOR
The ingredients are mainly plant-based and natural and there are over 29 shades of Naturtint to choose from.
We were pleased to see no ammonia or parabens inside though we were concerned that the hydrogen peroxide might not be great if you have allergies to it.
The results were among the longest lasting in our tests too. You can check out Naturtint Permanent Hair Color online.
Radico Colour Me Organic
We really like the Radico Color Me Organic range and they have over 20 shades of organic hair color to pick from.
It really nourishes your hair after application but we found that it only has mixed results if you’re dying grey hair.

Tints of Nature
This stuff is hard to track down but it’s worth it because the end results are very professional.
The product has been dermatologically tested and it’s certified cruelty-free too.
We found it to be incredibly easy to apply and had no problem achieving total coverage of grey hair.

Madison Reed Root Touch Up
Something a little different, this brush in powder is a very temporary dye which while very short-lasting is completely natural and won’t harm your hair in any way. So if you want a semi-permanent hair color solution this is the one for you.

Light Mountain Natural Hair Color & Conditioner
There’s no ammonia used in the Light Mountain range and they achieve their organic hair color choices by combining three separate natural coloring agents.
We felt that of all the products we tested this would have the lowest long-term impact on your hair. This organic hair dye is also cruelty-free and free of ammonia and any harsh chemicals which is amazing.

Naturigin Hair Permanent Color
Incredibly gentle and we really like the 19 different options that Naturigin offers but we did feel that you’re going to need to dye often if you choose this brand as it doesn’t last well.

Logona Natural Herbal Botanical Hair Color
This won’t cover all grey hair and can only be used on brown hair types too.
It is made totally of 100% herbal and botanical extracts and we think that’s why it’s less effective than the other brands that we tried. It does make your hair shine nicely while it lasts though.

Surya Brasil Henna Organic Hair Cream
Surya is a really gentle semi-permanent hair dye solution which can even be used on chemically treated hair.
It is, however, a bit expensive. It is, however, one of the best natural and organic hair dyes on the market. The dye is made almost completely from naturally derived ingredients.
