Going vegan doesn’t mean that you have to surrender the foods that you love and just chomp on lettuce all the time. 

In fact, it’s possible to make everything from a tasty vegan burger to a spectacular vegan pizza and that’s where our best cheese for pizza lovers comes in.

Vegan cheese has a long track record of being, well, disappointing. 

That’s because without the high fat content of dairy, it tends to melt poorly, brown badly, and taste not very much like cheese at all. Whole foods are fine, but not when they taste terrible.

So, for our best cheese for pizza lovers, we wanted a vegan cheese that had the closest resemblance to the basic dairy pizza cheese: mozzarella. 

That means no vegan cheddar, vegan Wisconsin, etc. was going to make the cut here and we didn’t consider them. 

That narrowed the field down and left us with four candidates for the best vegan mozzarella cheese that you can put on a pizza, which we then cooked in our Ooni Home Pizza Oven to put them to the test.

It wasn’t even close in the end, Miyoko’s was the only vegan cheese in this category that we tested that behaved like actual dairy cheese does on a pizza.

We liked that it wasn’t heavy on coconut oil like most vegan cheese is and it worked well in our vegan recipes without acting like a bad cream cheese. It has a real mozzarella flavor too.

There was nothing wrong with the flavor of our other entrants and we’d happily use any of those cheese in a sandwich or a salad but Miyoko’s creamy, melted goodness is the way to go on a pizza. It would be out of place instead of real cheese on cheese boards either.

The Runner Ups

Violife Grated Mozzarella

The Violife gets off to a good start by being pre-grated. 

That gave us some confidence that it would work well on a pizza and it performed pretty well.

The shreds did melt on our pizza and while they didn’t give us that stringy feel of dairy mozzarella, the mild taste was just fine.

They didn’t, however, brown very well. 

Moocho Dairy Free Mozzarella

Though we love the taste of Moocho Dairy Free Mozzarella and the fact that it comes pre-shredded, it’s a bit disappointing as a pizza cheese.

We’d happily eat this in a baked potato or on a salad but it doesn’t really melt or brown, leaving you with an anaemic looking pizza that doesn’t feel right at all. 

Daiya Cutting Board Mozzarella Flavour Shreds

The shredded mozzarella substitute from Daiya does melt and it was, in fact, one of the very first vegan cheeses to be able to melt.

That doesn’t, however, make it the perfect pizza cheese, melting is fine but we want taste and we find that this cheese separates when it melts and becomes a sort of salt and oil mess rather than stringy, tasty luxury. 

It’s OK for a grilled cheese though and it’s gluten-free and much better than nutritional yeast.
