Ambitious designer João Leão is a native of the beautiful coastal city of Porto, Portugal.
A couple of years ago he became concerned with the rising levels of plastic waste in this ocean on his doorstep.
He made it his mission to come up with a unique way to recyle and reuse this plastic waste.
An electric skateboard made completely from plastic waste.
“It all started with two problems, the plastic waste I was seeing being gathered on the beaches of my hometown, Porto, and the increasing commute times due to the high increase of people on the city and poor public and personal transportation infrastructures,” Leão explains.
Save the ocean and look fucking cool on your way home.
What Is the P.E.T. E-Skateboard?
The P.E.T. E-Skateboard or PET MINI is a fully recycled electric skateboard made from plastic waste and designed for the urban commuter.
What Makes The PET Unique?
This is where it gets even more interesting. Leão leveraged the potential of Open Design to accelerate design and prototyping.
The recycled plastic was made into sheets by Precious Plastic to fabricate the skateboard deck.
The mechanical parts can be 3D printed at any of the 1600 Fab Lab’s in their global network.
It’s local manucturing at a global scale.
The PET project was Leão’s design thesis for his Masters in Product & Industrial Design.
“PET MINI was developed based on the growing importance of creating participatory approaches to design, with the growing access to digital fabrication tools through Fab Labs and information through the internet, the Maker and Do-It-Yourself (DIY) movements are booming, we must rethink how we design and manufacture the products of the future through distributed approaches and bringing the user and industry closure to the design process.João Leão
This is one sweet ride and we can’t wait to get our hands on one.
