Plush Beds is the brainchild of Michael Hughes a man who became passionate about the way we live because of a personal tragedy.
He built the Plush Beds brand and his business out of this struggle and created a bedding company that you have to admire and respect.
Michael lost his father to Parkinson’s Disease.
He watched him deteriorate from a bright lively man over a period of 24 years to a shell of his former self.
During that time, Michael spent many hours researching Parkinson’s and he came to one conclusion – though it wasn’t proven 100% it seemed that many of the chemicals used in our environment might lead to Parkinson’s.
When his own daughter arrived in this world, Michael realized that he wanted to create as toxin-free an environment in their home as possible and that meant finding healthy, toxin-free bed materials and, in particular, a mattress.
Then he discovered that toxin-free mattresses weren’t easy to come by and, in fact, most were made from flame retardant chemicals called urethanes with no specific chemical formulae, making it impossible to investigate how safe they might be to use.
He cites a survey that shows flame-retardant chemicals are so pervasive and toxic that in America, where these chemicals are used all the time, a breast-feeding woman will have 75 times the level of these chemicals in her milk than a European woman will!
So, when he realized nobody was going to cater to his family’s need for a toxin-free sleep, he decided that it was time to create his own and Plush Beds was born. Organic mattresses, sheets & bedding, pillows… they do it all!
An Unusual Business
Michael built Plush Beds to be different and he has some founding principles that he won’t compromise on:
- The company has no revenue targets or launch deadlines – thus, it is never a temptation to cut corners to make money or get to market
- The company does not have a finance department and doesn’t have budget meetings and there are no compromises allowed to make the busines more profitable for shareholders
On top of this he implemented a fully transparent system which led to Plush Beds becoming one of the only dually certified organic manufacturing facilities within the United States of America.
In addition to meeting these official standards, Plush Beds has implemented many other quality checks and safety systems that go above and beyond the demands of the certification.
They also mandate that every worker has a safe place to work, sensible hours and is paid a living wage.
The Results Are Amazing
Made by Californian artisans and shipped across America – they are comfortable and aesthetically pleasing and best of all, they’re also affordable.
Yes, for once, a company has a completely green ethos without trying to extract a huge premium in pricing from eco-conscious consumers.
Michael says that they believe that absolute honesty with their customers is the only way that they can operate in an ethical fashion.
You have to see their work to believe it and when you do, you will see that this is a brand you can be proud of owning.
