Vegan Alternatives to Fish Oil Supplements

Fish oil is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. We need those Omega-3 fatty acids for health benefits.

They contribute to the development of our brains and also to our skin, bones, and hair.

But there’s a big problem for folks like us – fish oils aren’t vegan.

And that means many of us are searching for vegan fish oil alternatives and that will often mean taking vegan omega supplements.

So, we’ve been out testing dozens of these supplements to find which ones gave us enough Omega 3 fatty acids to make it through the day feeling great and this is what we came up with.


Nu Tru O-Mega-Zen-3

We should note that you can get omega 3 fatty acids from natural sources such as chia seeds and algal oil or hemp seeds (see our guide to vegan alternatives to fish oil for more).

And many supplements use these alternatives as their base. So, NuTru, for example, uses algal oil and it’s rich in alpha-linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, and a range of omega fatty acids.

Future Kind Vegan Omega 3 Supplements

Guaranteed to be free of micro-plastics and fully algae-derived these may be among the most healthy supplements we’ve come across.

Future Kind stress that eating chia seeds or hemp seeds might not be enough to get all the Omega 3s that you need. That’s because they say though chia seeds are rich in fatty acids, they may not be bioavailable enough for you to get your recommended daily dose.

Flora is one of the big names in vegan diet supplements and this uses soybean oil, flaxseed oil, sunflower, and other plant-based diet ingredients to generate a really satisfying supplement.

Take 2 caps each day and that will ensure you get 550mg of Omega 3s and that’s more than enough to lead a very healthy lifestyle.

They a fully vegetarian certified and offer a very high dose of Omega 3 fatty acids in each capsule.

We found these healthy fats helped to reduce inflammation and we could almost feel their contribution to brain health as we took them.

Mary Ruth’s Omega 3 6 7 9

They swapped the gelatin for pectin in these gummies which means you can be positive that they’re truly vegan. However, we should note that you need to eat more gummies than swallow capsules from some of the other entries on this list to be assured of getting enough Omega 3 each day.

We’re quite intrigued by the idea that they use sea buckthorn berry as one of the ingredients as it’s not something we’ve used before. But we found them to be very good as long as you don’t mind eating quite a few of them every day.

Garden Of Life Minami Algae Omega 3 Vegan DHA Supplements

iWi Life Algae Omega-3 EPA-DHA

iWi Life says that their algal extract Almega(R)PL is proven, in clinical trials, to boost your Omega 3 levels significantly when compared to a placebo.

Their trial participants took 1 gram a day for 12 weeks, mind you, which means you’ll need to take four of these gels every day to do the same.

If that’s fine. We found this to be an excellent fish oil replacement.

Final Thoughts On Fish Oil Supplements For Vegans

You don’t need fish oil to stay healthy and, in fact, there are plenty of great supplements that are suitable for vegans which can take fish oil’s place and have no fishy smell to contend with either.
