For some recipes a heavy cream is essential. Those with a plant-based diet will need a vegan heavy cream substitute that does the job well!
We recently looked at some plant-based replacements for milk for our fairtrade coffee but they’re all a bit light for a cream substitute.
So, we got our thinking caps on and we think these are the best vegan heavy cream substitutes on the market. Be prepared to enjoy some delicious vegan pasta dishes!
Coconut Cream Is The Easiest And Best Option
It doesn’t get any easier than vegan heavy cream from coconut cream.
You need some canned full-fat coconut milk (at least a cup).
Then all you do is whip the heck out of it until it thickens.
You use this in a 1:1 ratio with actual cream in any recipe
It works well with baked goods and in savory dishes that have a strong enough flavor to counter the sometimes overwhelming touch of coconut.
If you want it to be a little sweeter, you can always add some sugar but remember that a plant-based diet is already very rich in sugar to begin with.
Cashew Cream Is A Nut Based Option
This isn’t too hard to make either.
You need 3 parts cashew nuts to 1 part water and some salt.
Soak the cashews for a couple of hours and then drain them.
Rinse them, then pop them in the blender with your water and add some salt.
Give it a good blast and check the consistency, if it’s still a bit thick, add a little more water.
It’s great for both savory and sweet dishes.
White Bean Cream Is A Bean Based Option
With very little taste the white bean is a popular choice for making a cream substitute.
All you need is a cup of properly cooked beans.
Pop them in the blender and let it roll, and then add water until it reaches the right consistency.
We find that this cream works best with a savory dish rather than a sweet one.
Onion Cream Is Awesome. Really!
Onion makes an excellent base for a vegan cream for savory food (don’t add it to sweet dishes).
You need: a large onion, your favorite vegetable oil, some salt and lemon juice.
Firstly cover the onion in oil, and pop it in the oven at 400 degrees for about three quarters of an hour.
The inside will be soft and creamy and the skin a little burned looking.
Let it cool
Peel and then blend it adding some salt, lemon juice and a little more oil.
One nice thing about this cream is that it freezes well.
Oil And Non-Dairy Milk Is A Super Simple Substitute
This is very easy to make.
Take some non-dairy milk and some oil in a 2:1 ratio and then blend them together.
It won’t whip, so don’t waste any effort on trying but it works very well in savory dishes.
Final Thoughts On Vegan Heavy Cream Substitutes
A plant-based diet doesn’t need to be a boring diet and using vegan heavy cream substitutes opens up a whole new range of dishes you can put on the table.
They’re all easy to make or use and while they don’t taste exactly like heavy cream, they’re more than close enough to enjoy a fantastic dessert or two.
