I thought it would be easy when my partner asked me to find new mattresses for us and our kids. Little did I know!
It turns out that I had no idea how confusing the mattress industry can be.
I also had no idea, how to choose a mattress, what firmness of mattress I needed, what the best type of bed for a mattress is, etc.
But, I persevered and this is what I found out.
I hope that what I’ve learned can help you when choosing the right mattress too.
How To Choose A Mattress
The first step in how to choose a good mattress is to ensure that you buy a natural, organic mattress.
This means that no Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) will be released while you sleep, these chemicals can irritate your nose and throat and may cause cancer in the long-term.
Unfortunately, due to greenwashing it can be hard to find a list of the best natural mattresses but Wholepeople had already researched this for me.
That list not only includes the genuinely eco-friendly companies but it also deals only with companies that sell mattresses direct to the public, this means you get better value for money.
How Do I Know What Firmness Of Mattress I Need?
There are three basic firmness ranges for mattresses and though officially they’re rated on a scale from 1 to 10, that’s not quite how it works.
So, here’s how to choose mattress firmness:
- 3 – 5 = Soft – a soft mattress gives little resistance and isn’t super comfortable unless you only sleep on your side or have shoulder, hip or lower back issues which require a softer mattress.
- 6 – 7 = Medium – a medium mattress is the standard mattress for most people and it’s great if you, like my wife and I, consist of a couple of one side sleeper and one back sleeper. Ghostbed is great for these.
- 8 – 10 = Firm – a firm mattress is super supportive and can be great if you sleep on your stomach or you’re a little heavier than average. I liked Avocado’s firm mattresses for this.
Only you can know what the best mattress selection from this range of firmnessess is for you or your family.
It’s worth trying a few mattresses out in a real showroom if you’re not sure, just ignore the pushy salespeople until you decide what’s comfortable.
The Best Type Of Bed For A Good Mattress?
I won’t go into how to choose a good bed here, in detail, as that’s another article in itself.
But choosing a bed for a good mattress means picking something in sustainable materials, that’s built to last (look for lifetime warranties) and which is strong enough to bear the load of whoever is sleeping on it and the mattress.
The Best Mattress For Me
The wife and I eventually opted for a Ghostbed mattress as we’re mixed sleepers and it seemed to be the best way to support ourselves.
Our youngest has some minor back problems and we decided that Plushbeds’ medium-soft mattress would do better there.
And our eldest has a preference for harder beds as he sleeps on his stomach, so he got an Avocado mattress.
Final Thoughts On What Kind Of Mattresses Do I Need?
Of course, the best mattresses for us, aren’t necessarily the best mattresses for you, but the process for selecting a mattress that you go through should be similar.
Look for natural and organic brands, get the right firmness and buy from a trusted company that sells direct to the public.
Then it should be easy to find the right mattress on the right bed for you and yours.
